Driver’s License in 45 minutes for $10

Yippee! 😀 I got my Illinois driver’s license today, and it only cost $10. We got to our nearest DMV facility in Deerfield at 8:30 this morning and were the first ones in. They checked my papers at the desk, I paid $10 at the cashier, did the written test, the driving test, took a picture, my license got printed, and we were outside at 9:15!! It only took 45 minutes!

The test went great. I had a friendly examiner go with me on a 10-minute drive around the block. He just made me drive around without doing any special driving tasks. He was talking my ears off about anything other than driving, from movies and foreign drivers to the Chicago Bulls and of course the cold weather. Kinda distracting, actually, but it all went well.

For the ten dollars I could have taken the written and driving test three times! For the fourth-through-sixth time you have to pay another $10. That is such a huge difference from getting your license in the Netherlands. I renewed my Dutch license before we moved here and that alone cost me €48,65 ($70), and it took 5 business days before I could pick it up. To do a whole driving exam will set you back around €200 ($285) and you need to make an appointment through a driving school weeks in advance. That doesn’t include the separate written test, and not even the photo for the license, which you have to bring yourself. So getting your license here is not just a lot cheaper than in my home country … it’s a LOT cheaper!

If you fail a Dutch driving test you have to wait 10 weeks to retry, and pay the fee again. If I had failed my test here today I could have gone again tomorrow. Fortunately I don’t have to. They’re expecting a huge ice and snow storm here tonight and officials are advising people to stay home tomorrow. The National Weather Service expects the storm to drop up to 14 inches of snow in parts of northern Illinois Thursday night and Friday. And up to an inch of ice south of here. Sounds like we’re going to be stuck at home tomorrow.
