On Wednesday Queen Beatrix opened the world’s longest wildlife bridge, Natuurbrug Zanderij Crailoo. The bridge is 800 meters long and bridges between barriers in preserved land in the Utrecht province.
The bridge allows animals to pass over a road (Naarderweg), a railway track, a rail yard and a sport park.
The bridge links five previously isolated natural areas with each other, including the Utrechtse Heuvelrug National Park.
The Heuvelrug is surrounded by natural areas and preserved lands which are fragmented by construction of roads and buildings. The fragmentation threatens animal life; linking the areas together with the wildlife bridge gives area animals a better chance at survival.
