Matmata, Tunisia
This photo was taken on 9 April 2004 near the small town of Matmata in Tunisia (see our photoalbum for more photos of this trip).
The technique of building houses into the underground rock is unique to Matmata. It keeps the people cool in summer and warm in winter.
We stayed for one night at a large underground complex of caves that was turned into a hotel, the Sidi Driss Hotel (see below). In 1976 Star Wars was filmed at this hotel, and much of the set was still in place.
